Ruyton Athletic entered an Under 20 team in the State Club Cross Country Relays on Saturday May 1st at Jells Park. Sophie Perry, fresh from her 2nd place in the National 1500m, ran a solid first 3km leg to place the team into medal contention. Catie Callander, running the second leg, made a succesful return to form after a disrupted track & field season; and by the final change, Ruyton lay in second place . Courtney Powell, running the final leg, produced a commanding performance as she anchored the team to a 72 second victory in the Under 20 Championship over Box Hill and Knox. Courtney's time of 10.17 was the fastest individual leg over the demanding 3km course.
This victory bodes well for the upcoming State All Schools Cross Country Relays on May 22nd at Jell Park. Ruyton will be entering teams in the Under 14,16,18 & 20 age groups in an attempt to secure our 36th straight Cross Country Championship since 2003. |

The Victorian Athletic Community seems to be overholidaying this year judging by the numbers once again at Interclub last Thursday evening at Nunawading. Ruyton’s team was propped up by a sprinkling of sprinters, a small contingent of middle distance runners and an effervescent group of parents, two of whom had the thankless task of officiating at the Shot Put. Jenny Clements had the plum job of recording while Glen Robertson had the back breaking task of measuring and retrieving the Shot Puts. His competency indicated that he must have been a ball boy in his youth. Claire Robertson (28.6), Annabel Rodway (28.8) and Kate Walker(29.5) eased themselves into the meet by running in latter divisions of the 200 metres. The absence of a fourth runner in the 4x400m brought their night to an end. All three girls were overjoyed. The 800 metres also comprised three Ruyton girls. Laura Powell ran a measured race to post an impressive 2.24.3 for the distance. Paris Powell, coming out of a two month retirement from the sport, ran with Hannah Wilson in the final heat of the 800 metres. Both girls ran 2.54. The ease with which Hannah and Paris ran over the distance indicates that both girls have enormous potential as middle distance athletes. There were supposed to be two Ruyton girls taking part in the 3000 metres but a further two slipped past the coach to enter the race at the last minute. As Courtney Powell and Georgie Meehan charged out at the start, it was apparent that Laura and Paris had snuck into the field. The race was a memorable one with Courtney Powell setting a new school and club record of 10.01.2, Georgie Meehan ran her second best time of 10.31.0 and Laura Powell ran an amazing (but certainly not prescribed) 10.33.8. Paris casually rolled around with a friend, and treated the race as a cool down, which was the sensible option. The final Interclub Meeting prior to the Regional Finals takes place this Saturday (January 30th) at Doncaster. We look forward to a larger team taking to the track this week. |

Georgie Meehan and Grace Kalac were Ruyton's sole representatives in the Milers Club Meet held at Box Hill last Tuesday evening. Georgie was on pace to run a PB after running the first 800 metres in 2.28 but tired over the last lap, after a gruelling 3 weeks of racing, to post a time of 4.47.1.
Grace Kalac had her first hitout over 1500 metres at the Milers Club since concentrating on the 400 metres and 800 metres this season. Grace looked very comfortable at the 1500 metre pace and should look forward to some exciting races over this distance in the new year. Her time of 4.57.1 is her best first up run over the distance. |

January 16th, 2010
The first Interclub round of the new year is a notoriously lacklustre affair. Ruyton had a small band of six athletes who, considering the layoff, performed admirably.
Claire Robertson and Stef Larkin encountered a fierce headwind to register times of 14.09 and 14.52 respectively. Mackenzie Casey, sporting a Coolum suntan, ran a powerful 13.9 in the 90 metre hurdles then backed up to leap 9.72m in the triple jump. Stef Larkin jumped 9.76m in the same event to edge past Mackenzie’s leap.
The highlight of the night was the Open 1500 metres where Courtney Powell dominated proceedings to win the “A” race in a 4 second personal best of 4:36.6. This time puts Courtney on track to qualify for the 2011 World Under 18 Championships. In the same race, Courtney’s younger sister Laura ran a very respectable 4.52.2. This time follows her equally impressive win in the Under 14 Portsea Twilight Fun Run held two weeks ago.
Sophie Perry slightly injured her hamstring in the midst of this blistering 1500 metres but showed enormous courage to finish the race in a time of 4.55.0. The night concluded with the Powell sisters running the 400 metres. Due to the lack of sprinting depth on the night, both girls were forced into the “A” race. Despite being out of their depth, Courtney (63.13) and Laura (66.83) maintained their composure to register solid times. |

2009 Interclub concluded with a low key affair at Doncaster with 4 girls in action. Annabel Rodway looked set to run a personal best in the 200 metres after leading by 5 metres off the bend but faded in the last 30 metres to run 28.01. Annabel will be looking forward to become a 200/400 metre runner in the new year after her impressive performance in the 400 metres 2 weeks ago.
Bethany Hosking came to the track with severe severs pain in her ankle and was relegated to assistant timekeeper. She watched her fellow compatriots, Georgie Meehan, Zoe Hogan and Maddy Ellis take to the track in the 800 metres. Georgie ran in the "A" race and ran very competitively for 600 metres and fought on to run 2.25.7. This is the first time in 6 races that Georgie has not run a personal best.
Zoe Hogan ran a very aggressive first lap in her heat of the 800 metres. Drawing upon her rowing conditioning, Zoe sustained good speed in the second lap to secure a 2 second personal best (2.42.0). After the race, Zoe made a promise to me, and to her parents, that she will complete 30 training sessions over the holidays.
Maddy Ellis, still coming off the high of performing in the TV series shot at Ruyton, ran a far more conservative race. She ran two very even paced laps to run 2.48.0 for the 800 metres. |
